Overview

Dugi Rat may not be as well-known as some of the more popular destinations along the coast, but the large town is relatively undiscovered by tourists. However, it’s definitely an up-and-coming place, so you may want to explore before it’s changed forever.  Fun fact: in Croatian, Dugi-Rat means ‘long cape’.

Navigation

A factory and ship quay are visible W of the Dugi Rat headland. Inside the ship quay, there’s mooring for small boats, with a depth of 5m, but this does get crowded.

General Information

You will be able to stock up on supplies from the many supermarkets, fruit stores, and butchers in Dugi Rat- it’s a large town so you’ll find medical facilities, pharmacies, veterinary centres, banks, ATMs, and everything else you would expect.

Beaches

Dugi Rat Beach

Situated south of the town, this 180m long gravel beach offers natural shade, shallow crystalline water that is ust perfect for swimming, and options for refreshments nearby. Great for kids.

Mali Rat East

Heading north from Dugi Rat,  this 160m stretch of bleached gravel tends to be less crowded, apart from peak season. Turquoise waters, with some underwater rocks to explore, spectacular views, bring your own sunshades.

Mali Rat West

Down a flight of steps, this narrow beach stretches out from the harbour. Good swimming, clear waters. The road right behind it makes it seem a little less serene than some of the alternatives along the coast.

Orij Beach (East and West)

Situated right near the main plaza are the two gravelly Orij beaches, both over 300m long. The east beach has more natural shade as well as cafes and restaurants nearby. Both are great for swimming.

Where to Eat

Dugi Rat has a good variety of places to eat. The good news is that they are often more geared to locals, than tourists so they offer authentic dishes prepared in traditional Croatian fashion.

Konoba-Pizzeria Lucac

When people really love a restaurant, you know, because they claim that it serves the best food in the area. And fans of this place constantly claim it has the best seafood, the best pizzas, the best everything. It all depends on your viewpoint, of course, but gnocchi with prosciutto and truffles, black risotto, and catch of the day, are all excellent.

Zazu Food & Bar

For a chill place with awesome views, great food, fun drinks, and a great welcome, then Zazu is the one to choose. Happy hour at sunset isn’t to be missed! For something special to try – the black gnocchi is made in-house (with octopus ink)! A young, friendly, and laid-back spot for memorable evenings.

Things to Do

If you are a hiker or cyclist, Dugi Rat makes a great base for exploring the area, with numerous trails to follow through stunning mountain scenery.

If you prefer a more organized experience to help you discover the highlights of the region, an organized tour will be worthwhile. Sunspot tours (based in Omis) earn the best reviews.

Agencies can also organise day trips to National Park Krka, rafting and kayaking on the river Centina and boat tours to Hvar.

There is a great variety of guesthouses, B&Bs, and rental apartments available in Dugi Rat.

In particular, Villa Toni garners great reviews. It is sparkling clean with awesome hosts who are quite helpful. Close to the beach, with balconies overlooking the sea. Do not miss the bakery downstairs for freshly baked bread and pastries.
