Overview
One of the four villages that comprise the area of Jesenice, the tiny village Orij is located right next door to Dugi Rat, around 20 km south of Split. It’s still almost off the beaten tourist track – so if you are looking for somewhere peaceful to unwind, this place is a paradise.
Navigation
Around 600m (3 cables) W of Dugi Rat lies the small harbour of Orij. It tends to be crowded with local coasters, hotels, and tripper boats.
Where to Anchor
On occasions, especially in the high season, it is near impossible to enter the small harbour due to the crisscrossing network of lines. In this case, try one of the nearby harbours such as Dugi Rat, Omis, or Krilo.
Beaches
Orij Beach (East and West)
Situated right near the main plaza are the two pebbly beaches, both over 300m long and quite narrow – so you will not have to walk far to go for a cool down. The east beach has more natural shade as well as cafes and restaurants nearby. Both are great for swimming – the water is crystalline and warm.
Where to Eat
Orij can never be a mecca for cafes, restaurants catering to tourists, or a lively nighttime scene, yet you can still find some excellent konobas serving authentic Dalmatian dishes, and some cafes near the waterfront.
Places to Stay
There are plenty of apartments to rent in Orij. Just a word of caution – those which claim to be beachfront will be on the other side of the main road which runs along this part of the coast, so you should expect traffic noise. Omis, Dugi Rat and Krilo have a wider selection of accommodation.
Things to Do
Despite being so small, Orij is the perfect place if you want to just lie on the beach, soak up the sun, and listen to the waves breaking gently on the shore. Perhaps read that book you have been meaning to get round to while sipping an ice-cold drink from one of the beachside cafes. You can travel to Omis and Dugi Rat in case you want some hustle bustle.
Water sports, scuba diving, snorkelling are all available, and tours can be booked from an office in the village or the nearby towns of Omis and Dugi Rat- but this place is an idyllic retreat from frenetic activity.
